Many have erred with regards to this question giving in-comprehensive or inaccurate answers. The Qur’an in less than a Verse eloquently and comprehensively answers such that it can also be verified from the Bible.

And (remember) when ‘Iesa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary), said: “O Children of Israel! I am the Messenger of Allâh unto you confirming the Taurât [(Torah) which came] before me, and giving glad tidings of a Messenger to come after me, whose name shall be Ahmed…
[Quran 61:6]

Who is Jesus?

Explanation of the Verse:

1- “And (remember) when ‘Iesa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary), said: I am the Messenger of Allâh”

The Qur’an refers to him as son of Mary and not son of GOD or as GOD as few people have mistakenly believed.  In the foundational manuscripts of the New Testament nowhere does Jesus Christ refer to himself as the Son of God. He identifies himself as the Son of Man eighty eight times though. And from the Bible is Jesus own saying : For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth – Matthew 12:40

2- “O Children of Israel! I am the Messenger of Allâh unto you”

That Jesus has been sent to the nation of Israel and not to the whole world. Evidence is Jesus own saying: I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel – Matthew 15:24 . So his scope remains limited to the nation of Israel. What is amazing is that Muslims are supposed to acknowledge the messengership of Jesus as part of their fundamental beliefs.

His Mission:

3.“confirming the Taurât [(Torah) which came] before me”

That Jesus came to confirm the message of the Taurah(Old Testament), evidence is Jesus own saying: Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil – Matthew 5:17. And the below conversation further throws light on this aspect :

M’t:19:16: And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life?

M’t:19:17: And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.

M’t:19:18: He saith unto him, Which? Jesus said, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness,

M’t:19:19: Honour thy father and thy mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

What is astonishing is that majority of the Christians have cut themselves off from the teachings of Old Testament and this was primarily due to Paul’s new interpretation of Christianity.

4.“And giving glad tidings of a Messenger to come after me, whose name shall be Ahmed”

The second important mission of Jesus is his prophesizing of a messenger to come, the Final messenger of GOD whose name shall be Ahmed(Muhammad). When Jesus explained that God’s kingdom and His choice will be taken away from the Jews, and given to another nation, the nation of Arabs, it irked the Jews and they sought to kill him. He used parables extensively to drive this message as in Matthew 21:33-45 , 22:1-14 and again in 13:1-23.

Other times he prophesized to console his disciples as he was leaving this world as in John 14:15-30. Some of the salient points of this prophecy are:

Joh:14:15: If ye love me, keep my commandments.

Joh:14:16: And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;

Explanation: Again the emphasis on guarding the commandments followed by the glad tidings of a comforter. Here Jesus ties the two great missions for which he was sent forth.

And some of the main points of the prophecy in John 16:1-14

When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you.

Explanation: The final messenger of GOD will give Jesus his due position and restore his honour and the messenger does not speak except with revelation from GOD. Who else has done this to Jesus, except Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah(Peace and blessing be upon him).
